While Volo is not a playable companion in Baldur’s Gate 3, you can still have this scholar stay at your camp after finishing the quest. This article is all about finishing Volo’s quest and how to do it efficiently especially if you are lost and you are trying to look for a way to open the cage.
Location of Volo and Starting Quest
This quest only starts when you move up from the Blighted Village area. You will need to enter the gate and being a Drow will be beneficial here as goblins are more friendly towards you. The Drow-based responses will show up every now and then when you talk to these goblins.
If you are not a Drow, you will need to infiltrate their camp. Without any spoilers, you will need to put something on your face if you do not want to fight. There will be an option for this during one of the cutscenes.
After entering the gate to the Goblin Camp, you will immediately see Volo performing for a goblin named Gribbo. This interaction will tell how Volo is basically a slave to Gribbo. Gribbo will eventually get angry and lock Volo in his cage.
To find Volo, you will just need to enter the next gate to the north where the goblin leaders are. Head straight after entering the gate and turn left. You should be able to see the quest symbol marker on your minimap and Volo will be located in a room with Gribbo watching him while drunk.
Rescuing Volo From the Cage
This is the tricky part. Everything will be marked red and interacting with anything will cause the goblins to get angry with you and potentially fight you. Grobbo will hold the key and to check, you can try pickpocketing Grobbo in the room and check the cage key. If you try pickpocketing Grobbo, you will need to be successful with the roll and make sure to manual save in this area before doing anything.
The problem with stealing the cage key is that Grobbo never leaves the room and there will be another goblin patrolling in and out of the room. Even after they stop interacting and the goblin patrolling leaves, they will restart the conversation after another 20-30 seconds. You will have no way of opening Volo’s cage without these goblins noticing.
My suggestion is to do the method done in the video above. Wait for the patrolling goblin to enter and interact with Grobbo and kill one of them. I recommend killing the goblin patrol first because Grobbo is a lot weaker.
There is a chance you can one-shot the goblin with a good roll from Astarion’s sneak melee attack. You can repeat by loading your saved game if it fails but this will be an easy fight so do not bother unless you want perfection.
There will be another goblin who will enter the combat outside the room so you would need to deal with all of them. They will try to throw bombs so before doing this fight, make sure to ungroup all your characters and spread them throughout the room. You can choose to have 2 characters outside the room but it is also a good strategy to lure them inside the room instead.
Kill all of them and loot all items which will include two keys. One for Volo and one for the other prisoner in the other room. After freeing Volo from the cage, you can learn his story and how he got captured by the goblins. You can choose to tell him about your camp so that he will stay there and tell you more about the mind flayers.
The alternate way to rescue Volo is by talking to Grobbo and intimidating her. You will need to roll for this to be successful. After that, you will talk to Volo and he will slip out of the cage by using his invisibility potion. You will see Volo in your camp after this.
Rewards From the Quest
Sadly, the only reward you will get is getting this scholar at your camp and help you on your journey to remove the parasite. You still get green weapons from the goblins so it can be useful in the early game.
This quest is a great boost in the early game and easy to finish. Since Baldur’s Gate 3 is quite difficult in the beginning because of all the RNG, things will get easier when you level up and short quests like this will help a lot. You can start this quest as soon as you are able to enter the grove with the druids.
