A Buyer’s Guide to Thin Bezel Monitors

There are two reasons why you might opt for a thin bezel monitor. Most people do it for the aesthetics of having the best screen to body ratio possible. Others do it for the functionality of not crossing a thick black line when looking over, and these need to be slightly pickier.

There are several reasons why every monitor you pick should have thin bezels, but this comes with some possible drawbacks.

Generally, the fact that any type of background lighting can’t be placed on the sides means that the monitor will have slower response times. This can be as little as a few milliseconds, or as much as two dozen, which would disqualify the monitor for things like gaming and video editing.

And if we go into more advanced screens we might lose the pricing advantage that comes from opting for multiple smaller screens. If you are already spending thousands on multiple 27’’ monitors, you can just buy one 75’’ 8K and be done with it.

Refresh Rate for Gaming

For 95% of the tasks you might use your PC, as well as an overwhelming majority of games, the refresh rate will only make everything marginally smoother.

While there is a huge difference between 30Hz and 60Hz, even when only watching videos, everything over 75Hz will seem relatively similar. That is until you start playing FPS games, especially competitive matches.

Higher Resolutions Tax the GPU

Gamers and video editors should bear in mind that higher screen resolutions are progressively more taxing for the graphics card. Going from Full HD to 2K will often cut your frame rates in half and increase the working temp of the GPU.

Our minds are better than any computer, and if there is only a small overlay between two screens our brain will just merge the ‘picture’ to give us one continuous stream.

You will need to know where your monitors will stand before you bring them in. Regardless of whether they will be mounted on the wall or stand on a table, you need to be sure that there is sufficient room.

Ideally, you will want your bezels to touch and leave as little space between them as possible.

Having your blacks and whites aim for the middle of the spectrum will force you to ramp up the brightness. This will, over time, damage your eyes, especially if the rest of the room is dark.
